Day 6 Glacier Bay

The early call came at 6.30 am. I rolled over to hug Helen and bang, she was burning up with heat. She was crook. So instead of hitting the 7.30am brief on Glacier Bay it was off to the medical centre at 9.00am. A pleasant South African RN greeted us and directed us to a pleasant SouthAfrican GP. Diagnosis, acute bronchitis, a plethora of drugs dispensed and Helen was back to bed.
Meanwhile the ship sailed up into some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. We looked out the window and snow capped mountains, glaciers reaching down to the sea, and wilderness everywhere.

It was weird being on a floating hotel with bars, restaurants, shops, and bedrooms and a mere kilometre either side, wilderness no man has ever set foot on. The scenery was breathtaking, the Dr said Helen could have short periods outside but mainly bed rest, she was able to get out and see the highlights of this amazing place. Huge Glaciers shedding (calving) large sections of ice into the fiord. Breathtaking.

The ship pulled in front of the Marjorie Glacier and stopped for an hour to allow all to take in this magnificence.

On the way out of the Bay the National Park Service and a local Tlingit elder gave us fantastic presentations on the geographic and cultural history of the region.
